Chapter 12 â Contact
I woke up around four in the morning, Dor wrapped in my wings, and I looked down to see her bright eyes looking up at me. I whispered, âYou're awake.â
She nodded then cocked her head. âYou look tired, go back to sleep. We're up on watch in an hour and a half just before the sun rises.â
Sighing, I admitted, âIt was a pretty restless night. I keep wondering if we can really do this. I mean, I can feel the Shaytan pressing down on me like the weight of a thousand worlds the closer we get. What are we going to do if, you know, we can't stop Xerxes and him?â
âFrom what you said, we'd all likely be dead in that case, so it wouldn't matter, would it?â
Pursing my lips as my mind went to my greatest shame. âYes... my daughter. What will become of her, Dor?â My fear for what would become of her if we failed was like shackles of terror that were dragging me down into the depths of an icy river, coupled with the other fear that if I somehow failed myself and everyone and used the last of my wishes, then someone burned the three wishes I would be forced to grant for them.
That would leave my daughter, who I have never met, having to live out the curse of being the next lesser Djinn, and to have her soul eventually consumed by the Shaytan to power his own reality-warping magic like a battery.
She smiled up at me brightly. âAngel... what if we don't fail?â
That for some reason was almost as frightening of a concept. I didn't know if I could go back to just being who I was before all of this. That college girl seems like a completely different person than I have become. And with my wings, I have a little value to the group, the eye in the sky. Sure I have nothing to offer besides that, being only human.
They'd have no use for me afterward, if we somehow, against all odds, find a way to defeat the Greater Djinn. Hell, even the ancient powers couldn't fully defeat the Shaytans, they could only lock them away in their own realm, so what chance did we have? How could going back to my mundane life again ever compare to being around all these amazing powered women and all the good they can accomplish?
I admitted to the girl I loved, âI'm... scared of that too. What use would I... I'm sorry, I don't know what I'm...â
She turned, closing her eyes and rubbing her cheek against the leading edge of a wing, then giving me a peck on the lips, âYour admittedly sexy wings don't define you, they aren't who you are.â She placed a hand on my chest over my heart. âThis is why we love you, even that grape ape pain in the ass. Not because of some feathers. You can't get rid of us that easily.â Then she
